These potato nuggets are very easy to make and ideal to serve at parties or picnics. These potato nuggets are simple to make and prepared with small amount of ingredients. Mashed boiled potatoes combined with tomato paste, onion, spices and breadcrumbs makes beautiful texture.
Tips of making perfect potato nuggets
Firstly boil the potatoes with the skin on before one hour of making nuggets. Keeeping the skins on means keeping the moisture inside the potatoes and not letting in the water. This way the potatoes will be dry when peeled after cooking.
It is very important for the potatoes to be dry and not have any excessive moisture or else the nuggets won’t be crispy. The other thing the potatoes need to be mashed very well or just grated. It should not have any lump in it or else the nuggets will break apart.
Also the recipe can be slightly changed by adding more of your favourite vegetables. For instance, you can add boiled peas, corn, carrots, beans and cauliflower to make it veg nuggets or veggie nuggets recipe.
Do not fry the potato nuggets at low temperature oil or the nuggets will break or absorb a lot of oil and will be soggy.
Lastly I prefer to fry for the crispiest version of the potato nuggets. But you can also bake them in the oven with a splash of oil, they will also be as good.
How to serve?
I love to serve with my favourite salsa sauce. It will be also perfect with any kind of sauce such as ketchup, aioli or other sauces. This recipe is perfect served cold as well. So you can definetily serve it at parties and the kids and adults will love it, I promise!

Spicy Potato Nuggets
- 6 large potatoes
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 onion
- 1 bunch spring onion
- ¾ cup bread crumbs
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp chili flakes
- oil for frying
- Boil the potatoes with skins on for about 45 minutes or until fork tender.
- Peel and cool down the potatoes.
- With the potato masher, mash the potatoes very well.
- Add chopped onion, spring onion, tomato paste, spices and breadcrumbs and mix everything with your hands.
- Form little nuggets and fry in the preheated oil until both sides are crispy and brown.
- Serve it with your favourite sauce and enjoy!
